Winter pollution and dense traffic push AQI above safe limits in major Karnataka cities; health experts advise masks and air purifiers.
Bengaluru, Mangaluru, and Mysuru residents are facing unhealthy air quality levels as pollution rises in key areas due to winter weather, heavy traffic, and local construction activities. Recent measurements indicate that parts of Bengaluru such as Hebbal, BTM Layout, and Peenya have recorded AQI (Air Quality Index) values exceeding 150, putting them in the “unhealthy” category.
While Mangaluru typically enjoys good air quality, the current winter season combined with vehicle emissions and construction dust has caused the AQI to spike, impacting public health. Experts recommend that individuals with respiratory conditions wear N95 masks and avoid outdoor activities like early morning walks until air quality improves.

For safety, residents are advised to plant more greenery and use air purifiers indoors to reduce exposure to pollutants. Dense traffic corridors, particularly in Hebbal and Vivekananda Nagar, are major contributors to the rising AQI.
Understanding AQI Levels:
• 0–50: Good
• 51–100: Moderate
• 101–150: Poor
• 151–200: Unhealthy
• 201–300: Very Unhealthy
• 301–500: Hazardous
Authorities urge citizens to remain cautious and monitor AQI updates regularly. Continued adherence to safety measures can help mitigate the health impact of polluted air during this peak season.
