A gang posing as central tax officers blocks a CMS cash van near Ashoka Pillar, abducts staff and escapes with ₹7 crore; Bengaluru Police launch citywide hunt.
Bengaluru witnessed a dramatic daylight robbery on Monday after a CMS cash van carrying ATM money was intercepted near Jayanagar’s Ashoka Pillar. The vehicle, returning with cash collected from the HDFC Bank branch in JP Nagar, was blocked by a group travelling in an Innova car.
Pretending to be central tax officers, the gang claimed they needed to “verify cash documents.” They then forced the CMS staff, driver, gunman and cash handlers, into the Innova and drove them to the Dairy Circle area. Once there, the robbers made the staff get off the vehicle and sped away with the CMS van containing ₹7 crore.

As soon as the incident was reported, police set up checkpoints on all major entry and exit routes, while CCTV footage is being collected from Dairy Circle, Hosur Road and Kolar Road to trace the Innova’s movement.
Investigators also suspect possible insider involvement, and all CMS staff members present during the operation are being questioned. The Bengaluru South Division police have deployed multiple teams and widened the search to track down the gang behind one of the city’s biggest recent cash heists.
