SWR completes track doubling and speed upgrades, with Bengaluru–Hyderabad rail corridor set to hit 130 kmph by March for faster passenger travel

Rail passengers between Bengaluru and Hyderabad can look forward to quicker journeys starting next month, thanks to a major infrastructure upgrade by South Western Railway (SWR). The railway has successfully commissioned the doubling of a 30‑kilometre stretch between Makajipalli and Dharmavaram in southern Andhra Pradesh, a move that will significantly enhance capacity and speed.

The newly laid track has been cleared for operations at a maximum speed of 110 kmph by the Commissioner of Railway Safety. During trial runs, trains were tested at 121 kmph, with monitoring systems confirming smooth performance without abnormal oscillations. With this, the entire Penukonda–Dharmavaram doubling project has been completed, marking a milestone in regional connectivity. The project also included construction of 66 minor bridges, 15 road underpasses, a foot overbridge, and the expansion of a station yard with five lines.

In parallel, work is underway to upgrade speeds on the Yelahanka–Dharmavaram corridor to 130 kmph, expected to be completed by March. Covering 161 km, this stretch will benefit several high‑occupancy trains, notably the Yeshwantpur–Kacheguda Vande Bharat Express. For passengers, the improvements promise reduced travel time and more reliable services, strengthening links between Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh while easing long‑standing demand for faster rail connectivity.
