Fuel-free boating, nature-based flood solutions and tourism-linked lake development form the core of Greater Bengaluru Authority’s new environmental roadmap.
The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) has directed officials to prepare a comprehensive plan to introduce environment-friendly boating facilities across lakes under its jurisdiction, marking a major push towards sustainable urban development. Clear instructions have been issued that fuel-based or engine-powered boats will not be permitted, ensuring zero pollution and complete safety for aquatic life.
According to officials, the proposed boating system will rely only on non-polluting, eco-safe alternatives, with strict safeguards to protect lake ecosystems and water quality. The larger aim is to transform Bengaluru’s lakes into public-friendly attraction hubs, without compromising their ecological balance.
To strengthen this initiative, the GBA has called for close coordination with the Tourism Department, enabling responsible tourism while preserving the natural character of the water bodies. Authorities have underlined that nature-based development must take priority, and all city-level projects should strictly follow environment-friendly principles.
In a separate but related move, officials have been asked to examine the feasibility of introducing ducks into select lakes. The idea is being explored as a natural method to improve water quality, with experts expected to assess its ecological impact before any implementation.
Flood management has also been placed high on the agenda. The GBA has instructed departments to prepare a strong and time-bound flood control action plan. This includes identifying flood-prone zones, taking preventive steps well before the monsoon, and drawing up a list of works that can be completed within the next four months.
Officials said the broader objective is to adopt nature-based solutions that can deliver long-term environmental stability, enhance climate resilience, and reduce the city’s vulnerability to extreme weather events.
