State government approves ₹1,700 crore plan to revamp city roads with white topping and pedestrian-friendly design over the next three years
In a major step to address Bengaluru’s worsening road conditions, the Karnataka government has approved white topping of 500 kilometres of city roads. The ambitious project will be carried out over the next three years at an estimated cost of ₹1,700 crore, Bengaluru In-charge Minister and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar announced.
Speaking about the initiative, the Deputy Chief Minister said the government is committed to providing long-lasting and durable roads in the state capital. As part of the plan, roads with a total length of 145 kilometres will be developed at a cost of ₹1,700 crore, incorporating white topping along with pedestrian-friendly infrastructure to ensure safer and smoother mobility.

White topping, which involves laying a concrete surface over existing asphalt roads, is expected to significantly reduce recurring pothole problems and frequent repair works. The decision comes after widespread criticism from residents and business owners, who had repeatedly raised concerns over pothole-ridden roads and poor driving conditions across Bengaluru.
Officials said the project will focus not only on strengthening road surfaces but also on comprehensive development, including improved footpaths and better usability for pedestrians. The government believes this approach will enhance road quality and reduce long-term maintenance costs.
The announcement marks a key infrastructure push by the state government, aimed at restoring public confidence and improving everyday travel in one of India’s fastest-growing cities.
