With the Greater Bengaluru Authority elections approaching, the state government is moving ahead with 10 flyover projects to ease traffic, counter development criticism, and regain public confidence.
As the deadline for conducting the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) elections nears, the Karnataka government has stepped up its focus on large-scale infrastructure in Bengaluru. The state has decided to move forward with the construction of 10 new flyovers across key traffic corridors in the city.
The development comes after the Supreme Court directed that the GBA elections be held by June, triggering fresh political and administrative activity.
Sources indicate that the government is keen to address allegations that urban development in Bengaluru has slowed down over the past few years.
Notably, five years have passed since elections were held to the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP). During this period, the city has been functioning without elected representatives at the local level. The upcoming GBA polls, which will cover five municipal corporations, are being seen as crucial for restoring grassroots governance.

Officials say the flyover projects are aimed at reducing chronic traffic congestion and showcasing visible development ahead of the elections. This push comes at a time when the government is facing strong public opposition to the proposed Bengaluru tunnel road project, making flyovers a more acceptable alternative.
The responsibility of planning and execution has been entrusted to Bengaluru Smart Infrastructure Limited (B-SMILE), which has formed a dedicated engineering team. These engineers have been assigned to inspect proposed corridors, study feasibility, and submit a detailed report to the state government by January 28.
The flyovers are proposed to be implemented under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, with the government likely to fund up to 40 percent of the total project cost. Each project will have designated engineers for close monitoring.
The projects are expected to be formally announced in the 2026-27 Karnataka Budget, subject to final approval.
To streamline execution, the 10 flyovers will be tendered under three packages:
• Up to 5 km
• Between 5 km and 10 km
• Above 10 km
Proposed flyover corridors include:
• Sirsi Circle to Nayandahalli
• Yeshwanthpur to Halasuru
• Kanakapura Road to Anand Bhavan
• Minerva Circle to Hudson Circle
• Marenahalli Main Road
• MEI Junction
• Pipeline Road
• Doddaballapur Road
• Old Madras Road
The government hopes that rolling out these major projects will help decongest busy roads and rebuild public trust ahead of the high-stakes GBA elections.
