GBA forms a high-level committee to manage relocation, feeding and sheltering of street dogs; monthly cost pegged at ₹66.95 lakh with a detailed nutrition plan in place.
The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) has finalised an extensive new plan to relocate, feed, and manage street dogs across the city. Acting on a Supreme Court direction to establish dog shelters, the civic body has now approved a model that includes daily chicken rice meals, designated shelter locations and a structured cost framework.
A committee headed by Bengaluru Central Municipal Commissioner Rajendra Cholan has been formed to oversee every stage, from identifying dogs in public spaces to managing shelter operations. The committee is also responsible for fixing costs, supervising food preparation, and coordinating with various government institutions.
Cost structure and feeding plan
GBA has estimated that caring for one street dog will cost ₹3,035 per month, with ₹102 allocated per day. Of this, ₹50 is for chicken rice served twice a day, while the remaining ₹52 covers other upkeep expenses.

The chicken rice meal itself follows a strict formula:
• Rice: 150 g
• Chicken: 100 g
• Vegetables: 100 g
• Cooking oil: 10 g
• Salt: 10 g
• Turmeric: 2.5 g
The ingredients total 367.5 g, and after cooking, the meal weighs around 600 g.
With the current count submitted by various organizations, 2,206 street dogs, the city will spend ₹66.95 lakh every month, amounting to ₹8.03 crore annually. Officials note that costs will rise as more dogs are identified.
Numbers across GBA zones
• Bengaluru Central: 222
• Bengaluru East: 193
• Bengaluru West: 37
• Bengaluru North: 1,623
• Bengaluru South: 131
More data is being collected from schools, colleges, bus stands, railway stations, hospitals and playgrounds, which have been asked to report dog presence.
