Heavy rains lash Bengaluru; IMD issues yellow alert till Thursday

Bengaluru witnessed heavy showers on Monday evening with waterlogging in parts of the city. IMD has issued a yellow alert for the city and Karnataka till Thursday.

Heavy rain lashed several parts of Bengaluru on Monday evening, leading to waterlogging in low-lying areas and traffic snarls across the city. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the downpour will continue, with a yellow alert in place for Bengaluru and Karnataka till Thursday.

In a one-hour spell, Vidyapeeta recorded 34.5 mm, Kengeri 33 mm, and Rajarajeshwarinagar 32 mm, while other parts of the city reported 10–30 mm rainfall, as per the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC).

The IMD forecast suggests isolated heavy showers in coastal Karnataka till Sunday, while South Interior Karnataka, including Bengaluru, is set to receive heavy rainfall on Wednesday.

So far, Karnataka has received 730 mm of rain against an average of 696 mm, marking a 5% excess in this year’s southwest monsoon. North Interior Karnataka received 19% more rain than normal, while coastal and Malnad districts reported marginally higher than average rainfall. Seven districts, including six from North Karnataka, received excess rain, while Chamarajanagar faced a deficit.

With more showers expected, citizens are advised to stay alert as waterlogging and traffic disruptions may continue through the week.
