IISc Bangalore retains position as India's top university in Times Higher Education Rankings

Notably, India has emerged as a global leader, ranking second worldwide for the highest number of universities in the top tiers, trailing only the United States.

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore has secured a spot in the 201-250 range in the latest Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026, reinforcing its status as India’s leading academic institution. Notably, India has emerged as a global leader, ranking second worldwide for the highest number of universities in the top tiers, trailing only the United States.

IISc makes it to the top 250

IISc is the sole Indian university to make it to the top 250, showcasing its continued excellence in research and education. Other prominent institutions have also shown progress, with the Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences in Chennai improving its rank from the 401-500 category to 351-400. Delhi’s Jamia Millia Islamia and Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences (Bajhol) fall in the 401-500 band, while several other universities, including Banaras Hindu University, IIT Indore, and KIIT University, occupy positions in the 501-600 range.

More than 15 Indian universities have made it to the 601-800 band, including prominent names like Aligarh Muslim University, Amity University, and IIT Patna.

Globally, the University of Oxford has maintained its position as the world’s top university for the 10th consecutive year, with Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Princeton University, University of Cambridge, and Harvard University rounding out the top five spots.
