Doctors use Google Translate to communicate, donors and NGOs step in to fund treatment, and a 65-year-old patient walks out healthy after complex open-heart surgery in Bengaluru.

Bengaluru’s renowned Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research has once again demonstrated exceptional compassion and medical excellence by performing a free open-heart surgery and pacemaker implantation on a 65-year-old woman from Syria, ensuring her complete recovery despite severe challenges.

The elderly woman was suffering from intense chest pain, breathing difficulty, and severe irregular heartbeats. Medical tests revealed triple blood vessel blockages, a life-threatening condition that required immediate surgical intervention. Due to the seriousness of her condition, doctors decided to carry out complex open-heart surgery along with the installation of a pacemaker.

Initially, the patient was receiving treatment at Charaka Hospital in Shivajinagar. However, due to the lack of advanced facilities needed for such a high-risk procedure, she was shifted to Jayadeva Hospital for specialized care.

One of the biggest challenges faced by the medical team was communication. The woman spoke only Arabic and knew no other language, making it difficult to understand her symptoms and medical history. To overcome this, the doctors and nurses used Google Translate to communicate with her, ensuring proper diagnosis, consent, and emotional reassurance throughout the treatment process.

Another major hurdle was the financial constraint. The patient had no money to afford the costly surgery and treatment. Recognising her helpless situation, donors, NGOs, and Jayadeva Hospital collectively bore the entire medical expense, enabling her to receive world-class treatment completely free of cost.

Thanks to the coordinated efforts of cardiologists, surgeons, nursing staff, and support teams, the surgery was successfully completed, and the patient responded well to treatment. After continuous monitoring and post-operative care, she made a full recovery and has now been discharged from the hospital.

Speaking to NewsFirst, Jayadeva Hospital Director Dr. Dinesh said the case reflects the hospital’s commitment to providing quality healthcare beyond barriers of nationality, language, and financial status. He praised the dedication of the medical team and the support of donors who made the life-saving treatment possible.
