Bengaluru to get India’s second-largest cricket stadium as part of a sprawling 100-acre sports complex in Surya City, promising world-class sports and event facilities.

In a major boost to Karnataka’s sports infrastructure, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has sanctioned a ₹1,650 crore mega sports complex in Surya City, Bommasandra, on Bengaluru’s southern edge. The 100-acre facility, to be developed by the Karnataka Housing Board, will feature an 80,000-seat cricket stadium, set to become the second-largest in the country after the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

The project’s scope extends beyond cricket, with plans for eight indoor and eight outdoor sports arenas, Olympic-sized swimming pools, modern gyms, high-performance training facilities, and provisions for large-scale international conventions. The complex will also include hotels, hostels, and guest houses to accommodate athletes and visitors, positioning it as a multipurpose global sports destination.

Bengaluru, home to cricket legends like Rahul Dravid and Anil Kumble, and the prestigious National Cricket Academy, has long been a hub for the sport. The new stadium aims to secure the city’s place as a preferred venue for ICC events, IPL matches, and global tournaments, especially as the Chinnaswamy Stadium grapples with capacity and safety concerns.

Officials expect the project to not only strengthen Karnataka’s sporting legacy but also enhance tourism, generate jobs, and bring world-class athletic events to the city.
