Karnataka has successfully digitized over 65 lakh files and 8.2 lakh registers under its Bhu-Suraksha project, uploading nearly 45 crore pages of revenue records. This ambitious initiative aims to overhaul the state’s land governance by providing secure, easily accessible digital records.

New digital record rooms, equipped with biometric access, scanners, and surveillance cameras, will soon allow citizens to access these documents online via Seva Sindhu. These digital rooms are being designed to function as virtual libraries, reducing reliance on physical paperwork.

Searchable digital database

Officials reportedly highlighted that the project will address long-standing issues such as delays, tampering, and misplacement of land records. By indexing, cataloguing, and scanning every document, the initiative ensures that records are uploaded into a searchable digital database, streamlining access.

Revenue Department officials explained that the digital records will include keywords, enabling retrieval of even decades-old files as easily as current documents. As firewalls and classification systems are established, many of these records will soon be available for public access.

The Bhu-Suraksha project is part of broader digital reforms in Karnataka’s land management system, alongside initiatives like Bhoomi (land records), Kaveri (registration), and Mojini (surveying). These reforms are integrated into the Urban Land Management System, which aims to provide a single, reliable source of truth for all land-related records, ensuring transparency and reducing the potential for manipulation.
