Karnataka govt launches ₹5,700 crore ‘Water Resilience Project’ for Bengaluru with World Bank support

A mega initiative to revive 183 lakes, upgrade water systems, and secure future water needs for over 4 million residents.

Bengaluru has embarked on a transformative step towards long-term water security with the launch of the Bengaluru Water Resilience Project, a massive ₹5,700+ crore initiative supported by the World Bank. This ambitious project is designed to address the city’s growing water needs, tackle urban flooding, and ensure sustainable water management for the future.

One of the key highlights of the project is the revival of 183 lakes across the Greater Bengaluru region. These water bodies, once rejuvenated, will play a crucial role in recharging groundwater and reducing flood risks, while also restoring ecological balance in the city.

The plan also places strong emphasis on expansion of sewage treatment and providing new household connections. These measures are aimed at keeping the city’s drains and lakes clean, thereby preventing pollution and ensuring healthier water systems.

To create a smarter and more efficient network, the project will upgrade pipelines, reduce water leakages, and introduce smart meters for better monitoring and supply management. The government has highlighted that the benefits of the Water Resilience Project will reach more than 4 million residents, ensuring stronger water security and robust flood protection measures for the city.
