Kempegowda International Airport achieves a milestone as both runways are now Code F compliant, paving the way for seamless Airbus A380 and other wide-bodied aircraft operations.
Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) has reached a major aviation milestone. Both its runways — the North (old) and the South (new) — are now Code F compliant, allowing them to handle wide-bodied aircraft, including the Airbus A380, the world’s largest passenger jet.

KIA is already unique in South India for operating independent parallel runways, enabling simultaneous take-offs and landings. Until recently, only the South Runway had Code F clearance. With the North Runway now upgraded, the airport can run A380 and other wide-bodied aircraft operations on both runways, bringing enhanced operational flexibility.

Airport operators highlighted that this upgrade will not only improve Air Traffic Movement (ATM) but also reduce fuel burn for airlines. At present, Emirates operates a daily A380 service between Bengaluru and Dubai, and the approval now allows flexibility for more such operations.
The development is also a step toward preparing for greater passenger and cargo traffic in the future. Once the upcoming elevated western cross-field taxiway is completed, aircraft movement between Terminals 1 and 2 and both runways will become even smoother, enhancing efficiency and safety.
