Biocon chairperson Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw has urged efficient governance as the Karnataka government replaces BBMP with five new corporations under the Greater Bengaluru Authority.

Bengaluru-based entrepreneur and Biocon chairperson Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw has welcomed the Karnataka government’s sweeping reforms to overhaul the city’s civic administration. Responding to the decision to dismantle the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and replace it with five independent corporations, she urged authorities to prioritise citizen welfare.

“There should be an end to public suffering every day. Let the beautiful city of Bengaluru run efficiently, whatever it takes. We expect the civic body to serve the people the way it should,” Mazumdar-Shaw posted on X.

Her remarks came shortly after Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar announced the creation of the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA), which will formally come into effect on September 2. The new setup will divide the city into North, South, East, West, and Central corporations, each headed by a commissioner, covering over 85 lakh citizens across 712 sq km.

Shivakumar said the reform marks a decisive shift towards decentralisation, enabling faster responses to civic problems and improved accountability. The Congress government has hailed the move as a “One Vision, One Leadership” model, with plans for a 30-month mayoral term to ensure long-term focus on challenges like traffic, housing, water, and environmental sustainability.
