After Biocon chief Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw criticised Bengaluru’s poor roads and garbage problem, Deputy CM DK Shivakumar fired back, saying she’s welcome to take charge and develop the city’s roads herself.

A fiery exchange has erupted between Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar and Biocon Chairperson Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw over the state of Bengaluru’s infrastructure. Responding to Shaw’s sharp criticism of the city’s roads and garbage problem, Shivakumar shot back on Saturday (October 18), saying she could “develop the roads herself” if she wanted to.

Speaking during the ‘Bengaluru Nadige (Walk for Bengaluru)’ campaign in KR Puram, Shivakumar remarked, “If she wants to develop them, let her do it. If she comes and asks, we will give her the roads.” His comments came after Shaw’s recent post on X that reignited public debate over the city’s civic conditions.

Days earlier, Shaw had shared that one of her overseas business visitors to Biocon was shocked at the poor state of Bengaluru’s infrastructure. In her post, she quoted the investor saying, “Why are the roads so bad and why is there so much garbage around? Doesn’t the government want to support investment?” The visitor, who had arrived from China, reportedly compared the two countries, wondering why “India can’t get its act together” despite favourable conditions.

Tagging Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy CM DK Shivakumar, and IT Minister Priyank Kharge, Shaw’s post struck a chord with frustrated Bengalureans who face daily civic woes. While many backed her candid take, others found Shivakumar’s retort defensive yet revealing of the tension between citizens and the government over the city’s infrastructure crisis.
