  • BMRCL plans to allow sealed liquor bottles
  • Rule change to follow Delhi Metro model
  • Likely after airport metro line opens

Senior BMRCL officials confirm in-principle approval to allow sealed liquor bottles on Namma Metro, with full rollout likely after airport connectivity is completed.

Bengalureans travelling on Namma Metro may soon be allowed to carry liquor bottles, provided they are sealed, as the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) plans to amend its existing rules.

Senior officials from BMRCL confirmed to NewsFirst that discussions on relaxing the current restriction have been held multiple times, including at a recent high-level meeting. While there is in-principle approval for the change, officials said that the actual implementation will take some time.

At present, BMRCL rules do not permit passengers to carry liquor bottles inside metro premises. However, authorities are now planning to exempt this restriction from the existing Metro rules by formally incorporating a new provision.

Officials said the proposed change will follow the model adopted by the Delhi Metro, where passengers are already allowed to carry sealed liquor bottles on the airport line. Once Namma Metro’s long-awaited airport connectivity becomes operational, which is expected in about two years, a similar rule is likely to be implemented in Bengaluru as well.

A official clarified that the current ban does not have a specific safety or legal basis. Passengers are already permitted to travel on metro trains even after consuming alcohol, as public transport cannot restrict commuters on this ground. However, consumption must be within permissible limits, and travellers should not misbehave or cause inconvenience to fellow passengers.

The proposed rule change is expected to benefit air travellers, tourists, and long-distance commuters, particularly once the metro line connects directly to Kempegowda International Airport, making Namma Metro a more convenient travel option.
