A man allegedly poured petrol and set a woman on fire after she refused to marry off her 19-year-old daughter to him; police have registered an attempt-to-murder case and launched a manhunt.
Bengaluru witnessed a shocking act of violence after a woman was allegedly set on fire by a man angered over her refusal to marry her daughter to him. The incident has been reported from Saneguruvanahalli in Basaveshwaranagar, under the limits of the Basaveshwaranagar police station.
The victim, Geetha, lived with her daughter and earned a living by running a small provision store in the locality. According to police records, the accused, Muthu, operated a tea stall nearby and was known to the family. Both were also residents of the same building.

Investigations reveal that Muthu had developed closeness with Geetha’s 19-year-old daughter and had repeatedly pressured Geetha to agree to the marriage. Geetha reportedly refused, citing her daughter’s age and opposing the alliance.
Angered by the rejection, the accused allegedly broke into Geetha’s house around 2 a.m. He is accused of pouring petrol on her and setting her on fire before fleeing the spot. The woman sustained around 50% burn injuries and was rushed to a hospital, where she is currently undergoing treatment.

Following the incident, the Basaveshwaranagar police registered a case of attempt to murder. A search operation is underway to trace and arrest the accused, who remains absconding.
