Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya urges the Centre to halt the proposed annual fare increase and restructure the committee that decides Namma Metro ticket prices.
The proposed increase in Namma Metro fares has triggered fresh opposition, with demands being raised to review the mechanism used to decide ticket prices. Bengaluru South Member of Parliament Tejasvi Surya has approached Union Minister Manohar Lal, urging intervention in the matter.
In his representation, the MP has called for the restructuring of the Metro’s Fare Fixation Committee, stating that the current fare revision is unscientific and places an additional financial burden on daily commuters. He has requested that the revised fares should not be allowed to come into force in their present form.
The latest Metro fare hike is scheduled to be implemented from February 9, with ticket prices increased by 5 per cent. This follows a steep fare revision last year, when Metro ticket prices were raised by as much as 71 per cent in February, leading to widespread public criticism.

Highlighting the impact on passengers, the MP has urged the Centre to temporarily suspend the proposed annual fare revision system. He has also sought a review of the methodology adopted by the Fare Fixation Committee, arguing that it does not adequately reflect commuter affordability or usage patterns.
If required, he has suggested the formation of a new committee to reassess Metro fares in a more transparent and passenger-friendly manner. The appeal stresses that repeated fare hikes could discourage public transport usage and defeat the purpose of strengthening mass transit in Bengaluru.
With the new fare structure set to take effect soon, the demand for a pause and review has brought the issue back into focus, adding pressure on authorities to reconsider the current approach to Metro fare determination.
