Bengaluru South City Corporation and traffic police agree on parking reforms, pedestrian safety measures, and infrastructure upgrades to tackle rising congestion in Jayanagar.

In an effort to manage the increasing traffic congestion in and around Jayanagar, the Bengaluru South City Corporation has announced a series of coordinated measures aimed at improving traffic flow and pedestrian safety. The decisions were taken during a meeting chaired by Corporation Commissioner K.N. Ramesh on Friday, attended by traffic police officials, civic engineers, and other key stakeholders.

A major outcome of the meeting was the decision to introduce a new parking policy specifically for Jayanagar. To address the acute shortage of parking space, authorities proposed the construction of multi-storey parking complexes in the area. These facilities will be developed either through budgetary allocations or under a public-private partnership (PPP) model. Traffic police have been tasked with identifying suitable locations for these parking structures.

To further ease congestion caused by roadside activity, the traffic police were assigned the responsibility of clearly marking ‘Vending Zones’ and ‘No Vending Zones’ for street vendors. This step aims to ensure that commercial activity does not obstruct vehicular movement on busy roads.

Several road engineering measures were also discussed to improve safety and discipline on Jayanagar roads. These include the construction of road humps at required locations, clear lane markings, installation of warning signboards, and other pedestrian safety features.

Traffic police officials highlighted the need to relocate certain bus stops that are currently contributing to traffic bottlenecks. Based on their request, the commissioner instructed the corporation’s traffic engineering cell to initiate action for shifting bus stops at Raghavendra Mutt, Ragigudda, East End Circle Junction, and 40th Cross Road on RV Road.

Given the ongoing concerns over pedestrian safety in Jayanagar, where heavy traffic and frequent violations of pedestrian rights have been reported, officials also proposed the construction of skywalks. Skywalks are planned at Vega City Mall, Forum Mall, and Banashankari Junction to provide safe crossing options for pedestrians and reduce conflicts between vehicles and foot traffic.

Authorities stated that these combined measures are expected to bring better traffic regulation, safer pedestrian movement, and smoother commuting in one of Bengaluru’s busiest residential and commercial areas.
