Kempegowda Airport’s new pickup rules ease congestion but force longer walks to parking zones; shuttles exist, yet awareness gaps cause mixed reactions
Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) in Bengaluru has introduced new pickup regulations aimed at reducing congestion at arrival lanes. The changes, implemented by Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), have streamlined traffic flow but also created longer walks for passengers, sparking mixed reactions.
Under the revised system, only private vehicles are permitted to enter arrival pickup lanes. Commercial yellow-board taxis are now restricted to designated stands and pickup zones. The rules were rolled out at Terminal 2 on December 11 and Terminal 1 on December 13.

At Terminal 1, the main parking areas P3 and P4 are located about 700 metres from the arrival gates, significantly increasing the distance passengers must cover to reach their rides. To mitigate the impact, BIAL has deployed free transport options including buggies, shuttle buses, passenger vans, cars, and wheelchair support. Shuttle services between T1 and T2 also stop at P3 and P4, though limited awareness among passengers has led to confusion and delays.
While some travellers find the longer walk inconvenient, others view the changes as a necessary step to improve safety and orderliness. The absence of taxis crowding arrival lanes has created a calmer environment, reducing traffic bottlenecks and improving accessibility for private vehicles.
The new system reflects broader efforts to balance passenger convenience with operational efficiency. By separating private and commercial traffic, BIAL aims to enhance the overall arrival experience, though better communication and staff training may be required to ensure passengers fully benefit from the support services provided.
