  • Skywalks lie unused due to poor maintenance
  • Garbage, broken lifts and misuse reported
  • Elderly pedestrians face serious difficulties

Built at huge public expense to help pedestrians, several skywalks in the city lie unusable due to poor maintenance, non-functional lifts and safety concerns, reveals a News First Reality Check.

Skywalks in Bengaluru, constructed with the promise of safe and easy pedestrian movement, are today facing the same fate as pothole-ridden roads and broken footpaths. Despite lakhs of rupees being spent to build these hi-tech structures, the lack of proper maintenance has turned many skywalks into neglected and unusable spaces.

A News First Reality Check has brought to light the alarming condition of several skywalks across the city. Instead of serving pedestrians, these structures are now filled with garbage, emitting foul odour and posing serious safety risks. In many places, lifts are either missing or non-functional, making it extremely difficult for elderly people and those with mobility issues to use them.

As a result, crossing busy roads has become a major challenge, especially for senior citizens. Yet, due to unavoidable circumstances, some pedestrians are forced to struggle their way up damaged skywalks despite the inconvenience.

Lakkasandra: Skywalk in a shocking state!

The skywalk at Lakkasandra is in a highly pathetic condition. Although a lift has been installed, it is not in working condition. The skywalk itself has turned into a dumping yard for waste. With no proper access to cross the road and no functional entry, pedestrians are left with no practical use of the structure.

Majestic: Skywalk reduced to advertisement space

At K.G. Road near the Santhosh Theatre in Majestic, the skywalk appears to exist only for display purposes. Large banners and advertisements dominate the structure, while public utility has taken a back seat. Reports point to misuse, including illegal activities and the space being used by homeless individuals for shelter, raising safety concerns.

The reality check clearly shows a pattern, skywalks are built with great publicity but are soon forgotten once construction is complete. Without regular upkeep, these expensive public assets are failing the very citizens they were meant to help.
