Joint Police Commissioner Karthik Reddy directs strict action against meter violations, passenger harassment, and traffic rule breaches by auto-rickshaw drivers

In response to mounting public complaints, the Bengaluru Traffic Police have issued a strong warning to auto-rickshaw drivers, directing them to immediately stop illegal practices such as overcharging, harassing passengers, and violating traffic rules.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Karthik Reddy has made it clear that auto drivers will no longer be allowed to collect fares arbitrarily. He warned that strict legal action will be initiated against drivers who refuse to use meters and charge passengers more than the prescribed rates.

The warning follows a series of complaints from commuters across the city, alleging illegal fare collection, intimidation, verbal abuse, and threats by some auto drivers. The police have acknowledged that such behaviour has caused serious inconvenience and fear among the public.

Authorities also pointed out that many auto drivers are not wearing the mandated uniform, which is a clear violation of transport rules. In addition, drivers have been accused of failing to display their identity details inside the vehicle, despite this being compulsory under transport regulations.

The traffic police have stated that auto drivers who violate traffic rules will face heavy fines and legal action. More importantly, those found harassing or threatening passengers risk having their driving licences cancelled.

The Joint Commissioner has instructed both the Police Department and the Transport Department to maintain strict and continuous monitoring of auto-rickshaw operations across Bengaluru. Officials have also been directed to respond immediately to public complaints and take swift action against violators.
