Bengaluru has secured a prominent place on the global research map with 193 Bengaluru scientists making it to the prestigious Stanford/Elsevier Top 2% Scientists List for 2025.
This recognition highlights the city’s robust scientific community and its contribution to global research. The majority of the honorees hail from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), with 134 researchers, followed by institutions like the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR), National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS) and National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS).
The list evaluates researchers using a composite metric called the c-score, which is based on citations, H-index, and various other factors that measure both the quantity and quality of their work. It encompasses research across 22 scientific fields and 174 sub-fields, showcasing the diversity of contributions from Bengaluru’s scientific community.
Academics argue more can be done
While the achievement is celebrated, academics argue that more can be done to strengthen India’s research ecosystem. Experts emphasize the importance of enhanced funding, infrastructure, and the cultivation of a strong research culture in higher education. Venugopal KR, former Vice Chancellor of Bangalore University, reportedly pointed out that while the citation list reflects a commendable achievement, it does not capture the broader impact of inventions and innovation. To make meaningful strides, researchers stressed the need for better resources, cutting-edge labs, and an environment that fosters creativity and research output.
