The Horticulture Department suspends all commercial activities, including private heritage walks, as it rolls out its official guided tour initiative.

The Horticulture Department has temporarily prohibited private walking tours inside Bengaluru’s iconic Cubbon Park, following the recent launch of its own official guided tour service, Cubbon Walks. The department has cited the need to regulate commercial activities within the park and ensure adherence to park guidelines, which now mandate prior permission for group activities involving more than 20 people.

For several years, independent organisations and heritage groups have hosted guided walks at Cubbon Park, offering insights into its rich history and biodiversity. However, a recent government directive has led to a sudden clampdown, with organisers being told to cancel their scheduled tours, refund participants, and remove promotional content from digital platforms.

Officials clarified that while they support public awareness efforts, activities conducted for profit without approval cannot be allowed. The department has also opened an online portal for booking tickets to its guided tour, priced at ₹200. While commercial ventures are currently off-limits, authorities stated that volunteers conducting non-profit walks could be considered, and even integrated into the department’s own programme if appropriate.

Critics argue the move creates an unfair monopoly and stifles independent efforts that have long contributed to the public’s engagement with the park.
