The Karnataka government has formally moved a proposal to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to relocate the historic Jakkur Flying Training School from Bengaluru to Mysuru aerodrome, triggering wide attention.
The Karnataka government has initiated a formal process to shift the Government Flying Training School (GFTS) from Jakkur aerodrome in Bengaluru to Mysuru by submitting a proposal to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
The flying training school at Jakkur is a long-standing aviation institution, established in 1949, and operates on land originally earmarked exclusively for aviation activities. As part of the current move, the state government has communicated its intention to explore relocation to the Mysuru aerodrome and has sought regulatory consideration from the DGCA.

Alongside submitting the proposal, the government has also constituted an expert committee to study the feasibility, implications, and technical aspects of shifting the training school. The panel is expected to review operational requirements, regulatory compliance, and aviation safety norms before any final decision is taken.
The proposal marks a significant administrative step, as any relocation of an aviation training facility requires clearance from the DGCA. The government’s communication to the aviation regulator signals that the matter is at a preliminary evaluation stage and subject to regulatory approval.

No final decision has been announced so far, and the outcome will depend on the DGCA’s assessment and the recommendations of the expert committee. The proposal remains under consideration as part of the state’s ongoing review of aviation infrastructure planning.
