Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar says smooth land acquisition marks a rare success in infrastructure projects, with compensation rollout, new road projects, tunnel DPR, and major urban development plans underway.
In a rare and significant development for large-scale infrastructure projects, landowners affected by Bengaluru’s Peripheral Ring Road (PRR) project are voluntarily coming forward to accept compensation, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar said on Monday.
Calling it an unprecedented move in infrastructure development across the country, Mr. Shivakumar said the compensation process has already begun. Individual payouts range between ₹3 crore and ₹10-15 crore, depending on land valuation and extent of acquisition.
He pointed out that prolonged delays have sharply increased the project cost. Had the PRR project been executed earlier, the total expenditure would have been around ₹4,000 to ₹5,000 crore. However, due to years of postponement, the financial burden on the government has risen significantly.
Providing updates on other major road projects, the Deputy Chief Minister said the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed tunnel road connecting K.R. Puram and Mysuru Road is currently being prepared. Once finalised, the project is expected to ease traffic congestion across major arterial routes in Bengaluru.

He further revealed that the DPR for a 44-kilometre-long double-decker road project has already been completed. The ambitious project, estimated to cost around ₹9,000 crore, is expected to be floated for tenders shortly.
In another key development, Mr. Shivakumar said infrastructure works are being undertaken on land provided by the defence authorities, following coordination with the military. This collaboration aims to unlock new urban development opportunities in strategic areas.
As part of urban welfare measures, the government has earmarked ₹50 crore exclusively for street vendors, to support livelihood security and improve urban vending infrastructure.
Addressing issues related to the Dr. K. Shivaram Karanth Layout, he said the court has directed the government to compensate landowners whose properties were acquired for the project. Out of the 34,977 planned sites, nearly 17,000 sites will be allotted directly to landowners.

He added that the government plans to organise a special compensation distribution programme, coinciding with the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA), to ensure all eligible beneficiaries receive their due.
Overall, the Deputy Chief Minister described the PRR land acquisition progress as a major milestone in Bengaluru’s infrastructure expansion, setting a positive precedent for future urban development projects.
