Bengaluru Metro’s 5% fare hike has been put on hold after Union Minister’s intervention, giving commuters temporary relief while committee talks continue

Bengaluru residents received welcome news this week as the proposed Namma Metro fare hike was temporarily suspended. The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) had announced a 5% increase in ticket fares, set to take effect from Monday. However, following intervention from Union ministers, the order has been put on hold, bringing relief to thousands of daily commuters.

Union Ministers Step In

The suspension came after Bengaluru South MP Tejaswi Surya and Bengaluru Central MP P.C. Mohan met Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar to discuss the issue. Surya, who had raised concerns just two days earlier, requested reconsideration of the hike. Responding to the appeal, Minister Khattar instructed officials to halt the fare revision for now. Surya later clarified that commuters would not face increased fares from Monday.

Committee Discussions

Alongside the fare issue, discussions also touched upon the Metro Fare Fixation Committee. Reports suggest that the Union Minister has assured MPs he would consider changes to the committee if the state government formally submits a request.

Relief for Passengers

The temporary suspension has eased concerns among metro passengers who feared an additional financial burden. For now, Bengaluru’s metro users can continue traveling at existing rates, while broader policy discussions on fare regulation and committee restructuring remain underway.

This intervention highlights the growing importance of affordable urban mobility in Bengaluru, where the metro has become a lifeline for thousands of residents navigating the city’s traffic congestion.
