With a ₹400 crore allocation for Outer Ring Road and a phased opening plan for the upcoming Namma Metro Blue Line, the Karnataka government moves to ease congestion along the city’s busiest tech corridor.
In a major push to address Bengaluru’s persistent mobility challenges, the Karnataka government has cleared a ₹400 crore project to upgrade the 20 km Outer Ring Road (ORR) IT corridor between Silk Board and KR Puram, while simultaneously advancing work on the upcoming Namma Metro Blue Line, which will connect Silk Board to Kempegowda International Airport via KR Puram.

Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar announced the road upgrade plan, calling it a priority intervention after repeated complaints from IT companies about worsening congestion and poor road quality on ORR. Some companies had even hinted at shifting operations out of the city, citing rising commute delays, pothole-ridden stretches and productivity losses.

The government now plans to rebuild the entire ORR IT corridor to world-class standards, aiming to reduce bottlenecks, fix waterlogging points and enhance junction capacity along this high-density tech route. The 20 km stretch carries lakhs of commuters daily and remains one of Bengaluru’s most heavily stressed traffic zones.

Alongside the road upgrade, the government is also accelerating mass transit connectivity. During a recent site inspection on the Jakkur-Kodigehalli section, D.K. Shivakumar confirmed that the Namma Metro Blue Line will be opened in phases instead of waiting for the full corridor to be completed. Officials said that ready stretches will be commissioned early to give commuters faster relief.

The Blue Line runs from Central Silk Board to KR Puram and onward to Kempegowda International Airport, making it one of the city’s most crucial upcoming infrastructure links. Once operational, it is expected to significantly cut travel time to the airport while easing pressure on ORR and Ballari Road.
With both the ₹400 crore road redevelopment and the phased Metro rollout moving forward, the government aims to provide coordinated mobility improvements for the IT corridor, an area that has long demanded urgent infrastructure attention.
