Sankranti pushes prices up: Flowers, fruits cost more as Bengaluru markets overflow

As Sankranti approaches, Bengaluru’s KR Market and Avenue Road are packed from early morning. Citizens are buying flowers, fruits, sugarcane, groundnuts, avarekai, and ellu-bella, even as festive demand pushes prices up.

With Sankranti just a day away, Bengaluru is witnessing massive crowds at KR Market and Avenue Road as residents rush to buy flowers, fruits, sugarcane, and festive essentials despite rising prices.

Bengaluru is all set to welcome Sankranti, the first festival of the year, with full festive spirit. As the countdown to the harvest festival begins, the city is witnessing a surge in shopping activity, especially at major hubs like KR Market and Avenue Road.

From as early as 5 am, large crowds have been gathering at KR Market to purchase flowers, fruits, vegetables, and traditional Sankranti items. City residents are actively buying kanakambara, marigold, chrysanthemum, rose, and sevanthi flowers to decorate homes and perform rituals. The festive demand has also led to a noticeable rise in prices.

According to traders, kanakambara is selling between ₹700 and ₹800 per kg, kakada flowers at ₹500-₹600, sevanthi at ₹70, roses at ₹80, and chandu flowers at ₹30-₹40. Despite the high rates, sales remain strong due to the significance of the festival.

Fruits and essential Sankranti items are also in high demand. Sugarcane pairs are being sold for ₹150 to ₹250, while jaggery costs ₹80 per kg. Apples are priced at ₹160 per kg, pomegranates at ₹140, groundnuts at ₹100, and avarekai at ₹60. Many shoppers are also purchasing tubers like sweet potato (genasu) along with fruits for festival offerings.

Ready-made ellu-bella mixes have seen increased demand this year, with many opting for convenience while continuing the tradition of sharing ellu-bella as part of Sankranti celebrations.

The festive rush has resulted in heavy crowds across KR Market and Avenue Road, reflecting the city’s enthusiasm to celebrate the harvest festival.
