A bizarre turn in Bengaluru’s caste and socio-economic census has left citizens questioning officials’ awareness, after a temple was mistakenly marked for household enumeration.

In what seems like a major lapse in Bengaluru’s ongoing caste census survey, enumerators allegedly pasted a survey sticker on the Varadanjineya Swamy Temple, located near the Dharmaraya Swamy Temple on SP Road. The sticker, meant for residential households, was seen on the temple’s outer wall nearly 15 days ago, unnoticed until recently.

The temple priest, Shivakumar Dikshit, expressed shock and disbelief. Speaking to reporters, he said,
“They’ve pasted the survey sticker right in front of the temple. I have no idea when they did it. No one lives here, this is a temple where Lord Hanuman himself resides. Have they really tried to conduct a caste survey on God?”

The priest’s words capture the collective bewilderment of many Bengalureans. How could survey teams not distinguish between a home and a temple? Locals say this reflects not just confusion but a deeper negligence in how the city’s caste enumeration is being handled.
