A shocking theft in Hebbal shows why passengers must be careful while sharing personal information inside cabs. A driver allegedly used details he overheard during a ride to target a passenger’s house and steal gold worth ₹25 lakh.
A burglary case in Bengaluru has raised serious concerns about sharing personal information during cab rides. A cab driver allegedly used details from a passenger’s private conversation to plan and execute a theft at the passenger’s house in Hebbal.
According to police, the incident began on February 11, when a man named Syed Salman and his family were heading out for shopping and travel to Mumbai. Before leaving the city, the family booked a cab from Hebbal to Yeshwanthpur.
During the ride, Syed Salman was speaking to his wife about their travel plans. In that conversation, he mentioned that the family would be away for three days. He also reportedly told his wife that gold was kept in the house and asked her if the wardrobe was properly locked.
The cab driver reportedly overheard this entire conversation.
After dropping the couple at Yeshwanthpur, the cab driver returned to the Hebbal area. According to police investigations, he visited the area near the house and carefully observed the location. Later that night, he allegedly entered the house and carried out a theft.
The accused driver reportedly stole gold ornaments worth ₹25 lakh from the house. Since the family was out of town for three days, the burglary went unnoticed during that period. When Syed Salman and his family returned after three days, they discovered that their home had been looted.
After noticing the theft, Syed Salman immediately filed a complaint at the Hebbal Police Station. Police began an investigation and started examining CCTV footage from the surrounding area. During the CCTV review, investigators noticed a car repeatedly visiting the house location.
Police found that the same vehicle had come near the house eight times in a single day. This raised suspicion and helped officers narrow down their investigation. By tracking the vehicle’s number plate, police were able to identify the accused.

Based on the vehicle details, police arrested the suspect identified as Abdul Rehman, who was the cab driver involved in the case. During interrogation, police also discovered that he had committed similar thefts in the past.
Investigators revealed that Abdul Rehman had earlier been involved in similar theft cases. He had reportedly come out on bail in a previous case and later committed the same type of crime again.
Following his arrest, Hebbal police have now initiated steps to cancel his bail.
