Tejasvi Surya proposes modern tram system to fix metro connectivity in Bengaluru

Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya has proposed a modern tram system to improve metro connectivity. A feasibility study will begin in two weeks, with plans to pilot the project in the CBD and the Outer Ring Road tech corridor.

A modern tram network may soon glide through Bengaluru as MP Tejasvi Surya pushes for a citywide revival of clean, efficient, and people-centric transport.

Bengaluru may soon see sleek trams gliding through its bustling streets if MP Tejasvi Surya’s latest urban transport idea takes shape. The Bangalore South MP has proposed a modern tram system to tackle the city’s biggest transport headache, first and last-mile connectivity to Namma Metro.

Speaking at a symposium on urban mobility, Surya said he recently met Union Ministers Ashwini Vaishnaw and Manohar Lal Khattar to push for a feasibility study. The Union Railway Minister has already asked RITES (Rail India Technical and Economic Service) to begin the study within two weeks.

Inspired by tram systems abroad, Surya believes a tram network running through the Central Business District and the Outer Ring Road’s 17-km tech corridor could offer a sustainable and high-capacity alternative to cars and buses.

“From your home to the main road, you can walk or use EVs, and from the main road to the metro, a tram can move hundreds together efficiently,” Surya explained.

He also emphasized a mindset shift in Bengaluru’s urban planning, one that focuses on moving people, not just cars. Urban mobility experts say if implemented, this could be a landmark step towards greener, integrated public transport for India’s tech capital.
