Bengaluru’s M.G. Road will undergo a 15-day resurfacing starting March 5. Traffic diversions will start after initial night-time milling

Commuters traveling through the Central Business District (CBD) should prepare for potential traffic congestion, as the Bengaluru Central City Corporation (BCCC) is set to begin the long-awaited asphalting of M.G. Road from Thursday, March 5, 2026.

The project will cover a 2.2-kilometre stretch between Trinity Circle and Cubbon Park Police Station Circle. BCCC Chief Engineer Vijayakumar Haridas confirmed that preparations are underway to begin work on the evening of March 4, though minor delays due to traffic police clearances remain possible. The civic body has set a strict 15-day deadline to complete the resurfacing.

To minimize disruption on the vital arterial route, initial work—such as milling to remove the damaged top layer—will be conducted during the evenings after peak traffic hours. An executive engineer from the Shantinagar division explained that the work will be done in patches, ensuring debris is cleared immediately so traffic flow is not hindered the following morning.

A senior traffic police officer noted that disruptions should remain minimal for the first eight to nine days. During the initial milling phase, vehicles can continue to use the scraped surface without requiring diversions. Traffic diversions will only be implemented once the actual asphalting begins.

Interestingly, the project plan has seen recent revisions. Originally, the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) planned to white-top the road. However, traffic police denied permission for the extended closure required for white-topping, warning it would bring city traffic to a standstill. Additionally, the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) dropped its proposal to replace 40-year-old water pipelines along the stretch, as the faster asphalting timeline would not accommodate their extensive underground work.

The resurfacing is now being executed under the Chief Minister’s Infrastructure Development Programme for the Shantinagar constituency, utilizing a sanctioned package of ₹25 crore meant to relay seven key roads, including M.G. Road.
