The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) is gearing up to make motorists pay for using newly built flyovers and underpasses as part of its latest traffic decongestion plan.
Bengaluru’s traffic jam is all set to get a new twist, and possibly a new cost. The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) is working on a plan to levy tolls on vehicles using newly built flyovers and underpasses across the city. The move is part of GBA’s larger mission to reduce traffic congestion and manage urban mobility more effectively.

As part of the proposal, toll rates will be determined based on the distance travelled, calculated per kilometre on each new stretch. This means motorists could soon have to pay extra every time they drive through a new flyover or underpass constructed under the city’s latest infrastructure projects.
Speaking to NewsFirst, GBA Chief Commissioner M. Maheshwar Rao confirmed that the proposal has already been submitted to the state government for approval, and the authority is awaiting the green signal to implement it. Once approved, the toll system will be made mandatory for vehicles using the newly built corridors.

Officials claim the initiative is aimed at reducing congestion and ensuring better maintenance of the city’s expanding road network. The GBA has already begun preparing blueprints for several new flyovers and underpasses across major junctions to improve traffic flow and connectivity.
However, the plan has also stirred debate as it could add yet another expense for Bengalureans already burdened with parking fees and fuel costs. Still, the GBA maintains that the measure is crucial to sustain the city’s rapidly growing transport infrastructure.
