BBMP's horticulture and forestry department to step in

City dwellers are suffocating without breathable air. Bengaluru, famously known as the Garden City, is witnessing an alarming trend of relentless tree destruction, notably in the MN Krishnarao Park near Basavanagudi, all under the guise of development.

Plans are underway to fell numerous towering trees, revered for their shade and breeze, to make room for solar panel installation. Shockingly, one tree has already met its demise, and the fate of ten more looms ominously. This drastic move, funded by a substantial grant from Canara Bank, has sparked widespread opposition from concerned citizens.

Local residents, in the hundreds, are voicing their dissent, decrying the unscientific approach taken in the name of progress. Moreover, the lack of proper authorization, even from the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), raises serious questions about the legality of the operation.

The walkers’ association, entrusted with safeguarding the park’s greenery, is facing accusations of collusion in the tree massacre. Their proposal for PUF (polyurethane foam) panel sheet installation further exacerbates the environmental concerns.

Amidst the chaos, there will be a glimmer of hope if the BBMP’s horticulture and forestry department steps in to protect the park’s remaining greenery. However, the battle to preserve Bengaluru’s verdant heritage rages on, with citizens rallying against the destruction of life-giving trees.
