Nearly 50 lakh residents in BBMP zones to get Cauvery water

BWSSB is overseeing implementation of ₹5,550 crore project

Cauvery Stage 3 has been divided into ten water component packages

Water supply to 110 villages under Cauvery Stage V is set to commence in May 2024, benefiting nearly 50 lakh residents in areas including Rajarajeshwari Nagar, Dasarahalli, Mahadevapura, Bommanahalli, and Byatarayanapura zones of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike.

The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) is overseeing the implementation of this ₹5,550 crore project, primarily funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), covering approximately 225 sq. km.

The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Project (Stage-3), Cauvery Stage 3, has been divided into ten water component packages. A water treatment plant nearing completion at T.K. Halli boasts a capacity to treat 775 million liters of water per day. A transition pipeline will connect T.K. Halli to Vajarahalli, extending through Eastern and Western routes. The pipeline work includes 75 km from T.K. Halli to Vajarahalli, 54 km on the eastern route, and 56 km on the western route, with a diameter ranging from 300 m (T.K. Halli to Vajarahalli) to 0.8 m to 2.2 m (Vajarahalli to Kadugodi on the Eastern route and Vajarahalli to Thannisandra on the Western route). Ground Level Reservoirs (GLRs) are strategically placed, with three on the Eastern route and four on the Western route.

According to the BWSSB, project-related work is expected to conclude by March 2024, followed by a trial run in April to assess supply efficiency. Water supply to the villages is scheduled to commence in May. The project faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic and approval delays from the National Highway Authority of India, as stated in the BWSSB release.
