Comedian Munawar Faruqui, who recently won the Salman Khan-hosted reality show Bigg Boss 17, has issued a public apology after facing backlash for an insensitive joke about the Konkani community. During a performance in Taloja, Mumbai, Faruqui remarked, "Konkani log chu**** banate hai" (Konkanis fool others), which quickly sparked outrage on social media.

In response to the criticism, Faruqui released a video apology on August 12, where he expressed regret over the remark. He explained that the controversial comment was part of a 'crowd work' segment, where he engages directly with the audience. Acknowledging the backlash, Faruqui stated that he never intended to hurt anyone and that he understood the impact of his words after hearing from those who were offended.
“I noticed that people are getting hurt over my clip, and as a comedian, I do not want to hurt anyone,” Faruqui said in the video. He also noted that the joke was well-received during the live show, which was attended by people from various backgrounds, including Marathis, Muslims, and Hindus.
Despite his apology, the incident has reignited discussions about the fine line between humor and offense, particularly in India's diverse cultural landscape. Faruqui’s remarks have once again underscored the sensitivity required when performing comedy in a multicultural society.
