As technology advances, so do its perils!

Deepfake is a technology that can be used to alter audios and videos to suit one’s whims and fancies. In the digital world, it has perhaps emerged as the single largest threat to one’s own identity and even dignity!

To the uninitiated, deepfake is a portmanteau of ‘deeplearning’ and ‘fake’.

It employs artificial intelligence and is deftly used to seamlessly amalgamate fake or phoney with the genuine.

Deepfake impostors can create fake audio or video clips using someone’s voice. And using this voice, they can corrupt the gullible into revealing their personal information and credentials.

The right to privacy is a fundamental right. However, deepfake can give a deathly blow to it. For example, without consent, voices can be used to spread and disseminate false information which can be potent enough to be embarrassing.

If deepfake scamsters can use one’s voice to create controversial content, it can have a lasting impact on the victim. And this effect can be psychological as well.

The resulting emotional distress or even the hit on one’s dignity can be nerve-wracking.

Well, these are the disastrous ramifications the common man can be forced to endure. And are celebrities left out?

Celebrities sitting ducks of deepfakes!

Perhaps, it is no exaggeration to state that celebrities are the easiest prey of deepfake criminals.  Let’s look at a few incidents:

Rashmika Mandanna in the firing line!

The video of Rashmika Mandanna, in which influencer Zara Patel’s face was morphed with that of Mandanna, went viral last November. The whole nation was stunned and shocked at the sleight of hand of the digital demons, who could easily destroy a woman’s life!

PM Narendra Modi’s deepfake!

None other than our own Prime Minister Narendra Modi was at the receiving end as a deepfake of his alleged garba went viral. Stumped at what was happening, the PM himself urged everyone to be cautious about the deepfake evil!

Barack Obama cursing Trump!

Barack Obama was at the receiving end in 2018 as actor Jordan Peele’s voice and face were morphed into those of Obama.

Zelenskyy targeted!

Two years ago, Ukraine’s president Zelenskyy was portrayed to be telling his soldiers to surrender as the Russian invasion of Ukraine continued. The deepfake video was circulated for a long time on social media. At the same time, it was also shown that Zelenskyy had scooted, leaving behind his men. However,  the president responded in his video, rebutting the claims by saying, “We don’t plan to lay down any arms. Until our victory.”
