I just wanted to infuse all of the things that I ran away from as a child: Dev

    Dev recollected watching Koyla

Monkey Man starring Dev Patel has been receiving positive reviews ever since its theatrical release on April 5th. In an interview with BBC, Dev Patel talked about the motivation for the film and what he hoped to achieve for the Indian-American community through the film. “There was nothing in between that represented my existence, my identity, my duality of culture. I just wanted to infuse all of the things that I ran away from as a child. It’s got a real political, social resonance. It’s a revenge film about faith and how faith can be the most elegant weapon. I wanted to create our own stories and our own fresh world. I wanted to broaden our horizons so we’re not fighting over the same role. When I started writing this, the only roles I was getting offered were to be the comedy sidekick or the guy that hacks the mainframe for the big, cool guy,” Dev said.

Dev has also admitted to being a Shah Rukh Khan fan. Speaking with Draw Your Box, he recollected his experience of watching the 1997 film Koyla. “I remember a movie. You know, I don’t even remember the plot too well, because I watched it when I was really young, but it was Shah Rukh Khan and this movie Koyla. And he was like, at these red eyes and he was drenched in sweat and he had this, like kind of mullet haircut and this sword and it was like a, you know, a brutal revenge epic where he’d lost his voice by being forced to swallow hot coals and it was like, it’s kind of got it all. It’s kind of, you know, like me in a way. My identity is kind of, it’s been formed by all of these influences,” Dev mentioned.
