This decision follows a resolution passed by the full court of the High Court on April 26, 2025. The resolution came in response to growing appeals from members of the public, legal professionals, and civil society organisations. Additionally, a formal communication from the state government supported the initiative, prompting the judiciary to take further action.
To facilitate the implementation, the High Court issued two circulars on June 19, outlining the necessary steps for ensuring uniform display of Dr Ambedkar’s portrait. The circulars instructed all relevant judicial authorities to proceed with arrangements for timely installation.
The initiative seeks to honour Dr Ambedkar’s significant contribution to the Indian legal and constitutional framework. By displaying his portrait prominently in courtrooms, the judiciary aims to reinforce his legacy and underscore the values enshrined in the Constitution he helped draft.
The measure also reflects a broader recognition of Dr Ambedkar’s role in shaping India’s democratic institutions and promoting social justice. Implementation of the order is expected to be carried out in a phased manner across court establishments statewide.
