  • Mallige line of BSRP has emerged as a model of innovative infrastructure
  • Officials praise it as a "poster example" for sustainable transport solutions
  • BSRP spans 149.348 km with 64 stations at a project cost of ₹15,767 crore

The Kanakanagar construction site on Corridor 2, or the Mallige line, of the Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project (BSRP) has emerged as a model of innovative infrastructure development, with officials praising it as a "poster example" for safe, sustainable, and efficient transport solutions. The site, part of the ambitious BSRP project, highlights the potential of modernized urban transit systems.

Today, Dr. Shalini Rajneesh, Chief Secretary, Government of Karnataka, conducted an inspection of the site alongside Dr. Manjula N., Managing Director of Rail Infrastructure Development Company (Karnataka) Limited (K-RIDE), and other senior officials. Emphasizing the significance of this approach, Dr. Rajneesh stated, "This construction exemplifies strategic infrastructure advancement for high-density urban zones where traditional solutions like Road Over Bridges (RoBs) are impractical. This site stands as a testament to what can be achieved through efficient planning, innovation, and a commitment to enhancing urban life. We aim to deliver a world-class transport system for Bengaluru’s residents and commuters."

Innovative Elevated Rail Section

The section from Kanakanagar to Hebbal on Corridor 2 marks the first instance in India where rail infrastructure is elevated to eliminate level crossings, especially in densely populated areas where RoBs cannot be constructed. This elevation of the rail line bypasses community impact, ensuring that daily commuting and connectivity remain uninterrupted.

Execution Strategy

A phased approach is set for construction:

  1. Initial Phase: After work on the BSRP tracks is completed, temporary diversion of Indian Railways (IR) trains will be made onto these tracks.
  2. Railway Track Elevation: Once BSRP tracks are operational, existing IR tracks will undergo elevation and restructuring.
  3. Traffic Benefits: The elimination of level crossings will smooth road traffic, reducing congestion and enhancing safety.

Project Overview and Vision

The BSRP, spanning 149.348 km with 64 stations, represents a transformative vision for Bengaluru’s transport, with an estimated project cost of ₹15,767 crore and a completion target of 2026. The network includes four corridors with both elevated and at-grade routes, designed for a maximum speed of 90 km/h, which promises to significantly boost urban mobility for Bengaluru’s residents.
