An FIR was filed against Ranveer Singh for allegedly mocking the sacred Daiva tradition at IFFI 2025 in Goa, hurting religious sentiments

Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh has been booked following allegations that he hurt religious sentiments during the closing ceremony of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa on November 28, 2025.

The case stems from a private complaint filed by city-based advocate Prashanth Methal before the 1st Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) Court. Methal, a devotee of Chavundi Daiva, claimed that Singh mocked sacred traditions associated with Bhoota Kola, a ritualistic practice deeply revered in coastal Karnataka.

Acting on the court’s directive, the complaint was forwarded to High Grounds police, who registered an FIR on Wednesday for further investigation. According to the complainant, Singh allegedly imitated the divine expressions of Panjurli and Guliga Daiva while sharing the stage with actor Rishab Shetty. He is also accused of referring to Chavundi Daiva as a “female ghost” and performing an emotional scene from Kantara: Chapter 1, despite being asked not to.

Methal argued that Singh, as a prominent public figure, knowingly enacted the performance on an international platform, fully aware that it could offend devotees. The video of the incident quickly spread across social media, amplifying outrage among followers of the tradition.

The complainant stated he became aware of the performance on December 2, 2025. Following this, police registered the FIR under Sections 196, 299, and 302 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Authorities have confirmed that a detailed investigation is underway to determine the extent of the alleged violation and its impact on religious sentiments.
