Selected from 1,200 global entries, Vanya emerges as the only Kannada film at PIFF 2026, drawing strong audience response and critical attention in Pune.

The ongoing 24th Pune International Film Festival (PIFF) has turned the spotlight on Kannada cinema with Vanya standing out as the only film from Karnataka to be selected from nearly 1,200 entries submitted from across the world. The festival, Maharashtra’s official and most prestigious cinema platform, began on January 15 with the opening film La Grazia and will continue for a week.

Director Badiger Devendra, along with the film’s team, is present throughout the festival, engaging with audiences and film professionals during screenings and interactions. The response to Vanya has been overwhelming, with viewers from different age groups openly expressing emotion, laughter, tears, applause and deep reflection, after watching the film.

Audiences described the film as highly relevant in today’s times, especially in the backdrop of the ongoing Aravalli environmental crisis. Several viewers and activists from the Pune region said the film resonated strongly with their own local struggles, adding to conversations around ecology, community and responsibility.

This year’s PIFF also carries special significance as it pays tribute to legendary figures in Indian cinema. The festival is commemorating the birth centenary of Guru Dutt, remembering the enduring legacy of filmmaker Ritwick Ghatak, and celebrating the 125th birth anniversary of cinema pioneer V. Shantaram. Pune, widely regarded as Maharashtra’s cultural heart, is witnessing vibrant cinematic activity, with PIFF also marking the beginning of preparations for its 25th silver jubilee edition through year-long programmes.

Vanya will be screened again at PIFF on January 19, giving more festival-goers the opportunity to watch the film that has already sparked discussion and appreciation on an international stage.
