The director showcases the title, first visuals and cast details of his ambitious post-RRR project, set across ancient and modern timelines.
Director S.S. Rajamouli has officially announced his next highly awaited film Varanasi, marking his first major project after the global success of RRR. The announcement took place at Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad, where an estimated 50,000 Mahesh Babu fans gathered, filling the night air with chants of “Jai Babu.”
The film features a powerful ensemble led by Mahesh Babu as Rudhra, with Priyanka Chopra Jonas playing Mandakini and Prithviraj Sukumaran portraying the antagonist, Kumbha. Rajamouli presented the title and first visuals on a giant 100-foot LED screen, which showcased parts of the movie shot in IMAX format.
Music composer M.M. Keeravani opened the event with a special musical introduction to the antagonist’s character, while actor-singer Shruti Haasan performed the widely popular track “Sanchaari.” The filmmaker revealed that the film spans thousands of years, moving from ancient eras to modern times. He also confirmed that one of the major sequences draws inspiration from a key episode in the Ramayana.
Rajamouli spoke about the scale of the project, noting that the team has already completed 60 days of shooting: “Every day brought new challenges. Each segment required fresh ideas and detailed planning. This will be one of the most memorable sequences I’ve ever filmed, and easily one of the best in Mahesh’s career.”
Prithviraj Sukumaran praised Rajamouli’s ambition, calling Varanasi “Indian cinema’s biggest brand pushing boundaries again.” Priyanka Chopra Jonas also expressed gratitude for being chosen: “You are the visionary who took Indian cinema global. Thank you for trusting me with Mandakini.”
