  • High Court allows plea withdrawal
  • Film sent for CBFC re-evaluation
  • Release date to be announced soon

Madras High Court allows KVN Productions to withdraw plea against CBFC, clearing the path for censor certification and early release plans.

The legal dispute surrounding actor Vijay’s highly anticipated film Jana Nayagan has taken a significant turn, with the producers deciding to step away from the courtroom and move forward through the official certification process.

On Tuesday, February 10, the Madras High Court permitted KVN Productions to withdraw its petition that challenged the delay by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) in issuing the censor certificate. Justice P.T. Asha granted the request after senior advocate Vijayan Subramanian informed the court that the production house no longer wished to pursue legal action.

The makers have chosen to submit the film for review by the CBFC’s Revising Committee to obtain the required censor certificate. A formal letter conveying this decision had already been sent to the High Court registry, and the case was listed under the “withdrawal” category on Tuesday.

Jana Nayagan, expected to be Vijay’s final film before his formal entry into politics, had been caught in a certification delay dispute. KVN Productions earlier alleged that despite being informed that the film would receive a “UA” certificate after certain cuts and modifications, the CBFC did not grant the clearance even after the suggested changes were made.

The production company had also questioned the CBFC chairperson’s decision to send the film to the Revising Committee after initially indicating a “UA” rating. However, to avoid prolonged legal proceedings, the makers have now decided to follow the certification route suggested by the board.

Industry sources indicate that KVN Productions is open to making a few scene cuts, if required, to ensure faster certification and timely release. Once the censor certificate is secured, the team is expected to announce the official release date.
