Mahua Moitra has appealed her expulsion from LS
Top court yet to decide on her plea
She is accused of leaking Parliamentary credentials
On Wednesday, it was announced that Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud will decide on whether to list Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Mahua Moitra’s plea challenging her expulsion from the Lok Sabha.
“The CJI will take the call” Justice Kaul told senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi, who mentioned the plea.
CJI Chandrachud headed a five judge commission bench that assembled on Wednesday to hear the matter. Challenging her expulsion from the Lok Sabha, the TMC leader has appealed to the top court. This comes after the House endorsed the report from its ethics committee, which found her culpable of accepting gifts and illegal gratification from a businessman to advance his interests.
In a strong response to her expulsion, Moitra likened the action to being judged by a “kangaroo court” and accused the government of weaponizing a parliamentary panel to coerce the opposition into submission.
Last Friday, the Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla disqualified the MP in question. Now, there are calls for the MP to vacate the bungalow she was staying in as part of her being an MP.
