Jaishankar to remind current US Ambassador to India to expedite the matter

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar expressed his intention on January 5 to encourage the US Ambassador to India to establish a consulate in Bengaluru soon.

Jaishankar made this statement while addressing the audience at the launch of his book, “Why Bharat Matters,” held at PES University in Bengaluru. The event was also attended by Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya.

Reflecting on their discussions in Parliament, Jaishankar mentioned that Tejasvi consistently raised the issue of a US consulate. In response, Jaishankar suggested that Tejasvi meet with the then US Ambassador Kenneth Juster and make the request, which was successfully done in March 2020.

Subsequently, during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the USA last year, a decision was made to open a US Consulate in Bengaluru, considering its status as a global city. Jaishankar expressed his intention to remind the current US Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti, about the need to expedite the establishment of the consulate.

During PM Modi’s visit to the US in June 2023, it was announced that the US would be opening two new consulates in Bengaluru and Ahmedabad, while India would establish a mission in Seattle.
