  • These kits allow public to check quality of their food to combat adulteration
  • Food Safety Commissioner reportedly confirmed this initiative in city

In an effort to combat food adulteration, the Karnataka Health Department is set to install food testing kits in two malls in Bengaluru, allowing the public to check the quality of their food. Food Safety Commissioner Srinivas K. confirmed the initiative, reportedly stating, "We are planning to launch these food safety magic boxes next week."

The magic boxes, approved by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), will allow consumers to test for adulteration across seven key food categories, including milk, oils, grains, fruits, and beverages. The kits will contain a variety of tools, such as chemical solutions, litmus paper, lactometers, and magnets, to help detect common adulterants.

While the exact locations of the testing kits are yet to be finalized, the initiative will mark a major step towards engaging the public in the state’s crackdown on food safety violations. Alongside this public initiative, 100 rapid testing kits will be distributed to food safety officers for further checks across malls statewide.

The health department’s monthly inspections have already yielded concerning results. In August, officials found 12 out of 235 cake samples exceeded permissible color levels, while one paneer and one kova sample were also flagged for adulteration. Tests at railway stations and state-run hotels in September are ongoing, with results expected soon.

This initiative aims to boost public awareness and encourage responsible food consumption.
