Bengaluru Airport’s Terminal 2 has garnered widespread acclaim, both domestically and internationally, often drawing parallels with Singapore’s Changi Airport.

While such comparisons may appear ambitious, the terminal has distinguished itself particularly in its technological advancements. The airport’s technology team pioneered the successful implementation of Digi Yatra, an initiative widely adopted across Indian airports.

In 2019, the airport conducted a pilot program for Digi Yatra, enabling passengers to register at self-service kiosks and verify their biometrics. This facilitated seamless navigation through terminal entry points, security procedures, and boarding gates.

One significant challenge was ensuring accurate matching of a flyer’s biometrics with a database comprising 50,000 to 100,000 passengers entering within a 24-hour timeframe. After more than a year of refining the process, the Bengaluru International Airport Limited (BIAL) presented the system to the Ministry of Civil Aviation, which recognized its potential, particularly its capability for one-time registration for use across multiple airports.

Currently, a pilot project is underway to leverage verified biometrics for self-check-in baggage at airport kiosks. Airport authorities anticipate that biometrics will play a crucial role in streamlining various passenger processes, thereby enhancing their overall travel experience.

Authorities also mention ongoing government initiatives to integrate biometrics with passports, aiming to facilitate seamless immigration for international travelers. This may potentially reduce the need to present physical passports, with stamping purposes becoming their primary function.
